****************************************************************
Philoptochos is the women’s philanthropic organization within the Greek Orthodox Church, and the largest women’s organization in the United States. St. Nicholas Philoptochos is devoted to helping individuals, families and organizations in need. All proceeds earned through our fundraising efforts, such as the making and selling of New Year and Easter bread, and our holiday appetizers of spanokopita rolls and pans of tiropita go towards our on-going charities. Funds are also raised through our annual Mother’s Day and Father’s Day tribute cards.

As a local chapter of a larger national organization, we not only give to the National and Metropolis Philoptochos through our yearly obligations, but to local charities as well. Ronald McDonald, The Children’s Home, Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, Jubilee Soup Kitchen, Bethlehem Haven and The Women’s Center and Shelter of Pittsburgh are just of few of the several local charities that we support. St.    Nicholas Philoptochos strongly believes in keeping our charity dollars in the Pittsburgh area.

Outreach is at the very heart of our organization. Our pastoral committee makes several visits a year to parishioners in nursing homes and hospitals, and to those who are homebound, due to illness or physical limitations. We also prepare brown bag lunches for the homeless twice a year for the Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood Lunch Program.

In 2007, Philoptochos become associated with FamilyLinks, a nonprofit organization that offers a broad range of human services for children, families and individuals in greater Western Pennsylvania. Each week, needed items are listed in the Sunday Bulletin. Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, Philoptochos has made over 350 donations of items such as furniture, clothing, and household good to FamilyLinks’ clients. Please refer to the Sunday Bulletin link if you would like to make a donation to FamilyLinks.

We have recently become a part of the national Pajama Program. We will be accepting donations of NEW pajamas and NEW children’s books for distribution to children from birth through 17 years of age that are in the Allegheny County foster care system. Books and pajamas will be collected during the month of November.
Another part of our philanthropy is our Food Bank. Grocery store gift cards are given to individuals and families in need. Money for the Food Bank comes from donations to the United Way (United Way # 3288) and from individual parishioners.

Philoptochos has four to six general meetings a year and six board meetings. Parishioners are encouraged to attend and participate in the general meetings.

Some of our ongoing committees are:
Outreach: visits to the homebound, nursing homes and hospitals.
College Table: for all college and university Orthodox students in the Pittsburgh area.
Holiday Appetizers: making and selling Spanokopita rolls and pans of tiropita.
Bread: making and selling New year and Easter bread.
Lenten Luncheon: Fellowship luncheon on the first Sunday of Lent.
Entertainment Books
Mother’s & Father’s Day Cards

Food Bank – The Food Bank supports several of our parishioners and continues to need your support. You can donate by making a check payable to the “St. Nicholas Philoptochos Food Bank” or through United Way by designating the St. Nicholas Food Bank through your employers United Way contribution. Just designate #3288. Any questions, please contact Elaine Andrianos (412-731-4334) or Denise Daugherty (412-508-1326).

Philoptochos welcomes new and returning members. If you would like to join our worthwhile organization, please print the membership application, and mail it, along with your check, to St. Nicholas Philoptochos/Membership.
